Tuesday night I was supposed to be hosting for friends for a celebration of cocktails and dinner, and every so often we like to get together and just share some friendship times, I absolutely appreciate that I have friends that like to do this, as I find that working all afternoon makes it more challenging to find fun things I like to do doing.

I was looking forward to cooking our chicken, asparagus, plus potatoes, when I got home I discovered that it seemed awfully warm in our house.

I headed over to the thermostat which hangs in the wall, and that is when I discovered that the thermostat was reading 83 degrees! I do live in the southeastern portion of the country, and let me tell you most of the Year here it is quite hot. We have not yet reached summer, yet, though oh, and I absolutely don’t ever expect for my home to be 83 degrees. I had set the thermostat to 73 when I left that afternoon, as I consistently do before I leave for work, however I knew something was wrong. I had more than one option. I could call my friends and tell them that our air conditioning was on the fritz and awe would have to do our dinner another time, or I could try to have a great time with our friends even without AC, however of course, not only would we not have the HVAC running, I also would be running the oven and the stove, so it was more likely to be even hotter here than what the thermostat currently reads. I absolutely thought those were our only more than one options, so I called our friend Jennifer first. I was quite overjoyed when Jennifer said we do not have to cancel, we can just have dinner at our place. I was so enthusiastic with Jennifer because normally people do not like to switch our celebrations at the last minute, as oftentimes our houses are not exactly clean all the time, but coming house to a thermostat that reads 83 is no fun, but having friends like Jennifer that you can count on is just fabulous

It’s funny, before I bought my own house, I didn’t have access to a central HVAC system.

Not even my parents had a central HVAC. They only used a boiler system along with a couple of window AC units. I lived in a few different apartments before buying a house too and they only provided heating with no cooling. That’s why I used a window AC unit for such a long time and it worked well enough considering the space in my apartments was limited. Well, it was a huge change for me when I bought a home and I felt pretty good about myself. I was talking with the neighbor one day and he mentioned that I would have to get a cover for my outdoor AC condenser unit. He said the previous neighbor before me never used a cover and he warned how it could get damaged with falling icicles and even critters could work their way into the equipment if you’re not careful. So I went to the hardware store and purchased a nice cover for the AC condenser unit. I was happy that I did that too because we had a few icicles fall onto the equipment, but it hit the hardcover and didn’t cause any damage to the HVAC equipment. The neighbor also advised that I get on an HVAC service plan if I was looking to stay around because that was the best way to save cash on regular maintenance and care. He said it was smart to do this because you never have to worry about system breakdowns and your system runs best with regular care, so you have lower energy bills. I got a lot of great advice from my neighbor.

A long time ago during a hard winter, we had our heating system break down.

We were very lucky to have a fireplace. We kept that fireplace going the whole time making sure that it never went out and provided enough heating to keep us from freezing. This was while we were waiting on an HVAC professional to come out to repair our gas furnace. We tried to get that gas furnace to run again with no luck. Because this was considered an emergency repair, we had to pay almost triple the amount a normal repair would cost. It was indeed an emergency though and it also was a valuable lesson to always have the heating system tuned up before the cold season. This isn’t only about comfort, it’s about keeping you alive through the winter months. So ever since that time, we chose to enroll into an HVAC service plan so that both our heating and cooling systems would be properly taken care of and we wouldn’t have any more issues with unexpected breakdowns. With the HVAC service plan, we actually have been saving a lot of money on our maintenance work because when you get into the contract, the prices become much lower. It’s also easy to schedule all the appointments and I get reminders all the time when to expect the HVAC experts. Ever since being enrolled in this place with our local HVAC company, we never have experienced any more breakdowns, though the professionals have warned us to start saving up for a new HVAC unit within the next few years.

One thing I didn’t think too much about after moving into a new house was keeping good air quality.

I used to always use high quality air filters to keep the air quality in our home, but this new home didn’t have a ductwork system. The previous owners only used window AC units for cooling and they had a boiler system for heating in the winter season. Also, there is a very nice fireplace in the living room and that’s one of the main reasons why I think we fell in love with the place. That and the huge amount of land for the children to go running around and playing football and things like that. The boiler system worked great through the winter season and our energy bills were low which I appreciated. I didn’t think it would be great to use the window AC units, but I also thought it would be too expensive to have a huge ductwork system installed. I decided to consult with an HVAC expert on this matter. He said there were ductless HVAC options that would be perfect for our needs. He recommended a ductless multi-split system which would provide customized temperature control settings in different zones throughout the house. He said this was a huge energy saver especially since you didn’t have to provide heating and cooling to the whole property from a single thermostat. We went for the upgrade and this system came with washable filters. Also the HVAC expert said if we were concerned about air quality, it would be good to have UV air purifiers installed throughout the house. We got those and they use HEPA filters for excellent air quality and protection at home!

As soon as the children were officially on summer break, my wife and I were already feeling aggravated. The kids kept acting too hyper, they were eating too much sugar, and they were getting on our nerves. We kept having to send the kids out to play instead of having them play on their video games all day. We have a basketball hoop out there for them to play all they want, a swimming pool that is ready to be enjoyed, along with a swing set! I mean, what’s not to enjoy out there. Not to mention they can always go visit with friends and our son has his electric dirt bike he can ride around the property. I just told the children to make sure to come back in the house for some air conditioning breaks from time to time. I knew it was hot outside and I didn’t want them to be dehydrated either, so I told them all to keep a water bottle handy. I’m glad they at least listened to me about coming back in the house for air conditioning breaks, but I kept having to yell at them to keep the door shut. Our son who came in last seemed a little dazed as he was just standing there with the door wide open, so he got yelled at. I didn’t want all the AC to escape from the house and it already was feeling a little overheated after that door was open too long. One of these days, these children will learn to keep the AC or heating from escaping the house.

When my wife said she was going into town to get some groceries, she asked if there was anything I wanted.

• Well, I thought it would be nice to fire up some BBQ chicken on the grill.

She smiled when I said this because she loves when I grill up some BBQ chicken or anything on the grill for that matter. I told her I just needed some chicken breasts, some of our preferred BBQ sauce, and some charcoal for the grill. A lot of people enjoy using gas grills, while I only prefer charcoal because it adds to the flavor of the grilled food! Since it was a hot day, my wife cranked the AC system as soon as she got into the car. She asked me if I wanted to come with her and she would keep the AC settings extra cool for me, but I told her I had to finish with my work in the office. When she got back, she told me how miserable it was in the store because the temperature control settings were lacking. She asked why they didn’t turn the AC up some more, but they said the AC system was malfunctioning and they were waiting for the HVAC professionals to arrive. She hurried through the store and she said she was in such a rush, she forgot to get the charcoal. I was cool about that because I had just enough charcoal to grill up all the chicken. The food honestly tasted great, everybody said so while we ate in our home with the ideal temperature control settings with the AC system.
