When I graduated, dad took a hard stance with me.

He wasn’t sympathetic with anything I had to say about getting a job. He offered to give me money if I wanted to go to university, but it had to be with a career in mind. I was offended and hurt, but I immediately started to plan my life. Somewhere along the line, I realized Heating, Ventilation and A/C was a job that would always have job security, and I was happy to talk to dad. He owned the local Heating, Ventilation and A/C company, and I wanted to know if he would let me work my way through university. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my dad more proud or more animated. He started telling me about the Heating, Ventilation and A/C company and the plans he had for the future. He asked if I would be interested in getting a degree in engineering and design for Heating, Ventilation and A/C systems? I wanted to become a Heating, Ventilation and A/C professional first, and after that, I would consider the option of engineering and designing Heating, Ventilation and A/C systems. It amazed me how quickly he changed his attitude towards me, and was now talking about me becoming his partner in the Heating, Ventilation and A/C company.

I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.

• One of the most pressing questions for me was how much would I be able to earn, and how long would I need to go to university to get the education.

I had already ruled out being a doctor or a lawyer, because I didn’t want to go to university for a decade or more. I thought about other careers I could take up that would earn me a lot of money, but they all required going to university and years of training. After writing down all the careers I could think of, I finally wrote down being a Heating, Ventilation and A/C professional. I was sure they had to get paid good money, even if it wasn’t as much as a doctor or lawyer. I found out you only had to go to university for about a year to get your Heating, Ventilation and A/C certification. After a year of apprenticeship, if it’s required, and getting paid while doing the job, you get promoted to being a master Heating, Ventilation and A/C professional. If you’re a master of anything, I was sure it meant you were going to get a lot more. I knew it would take a long time, but I wanted to do a bit of work to get a profession, and not need to work hard all my life to get paid well. I was in for an intense few years. I not only had to work hard, but I didn’t get the amount of money I wanted. I really enjoy being a Heating, Ventilation and A/C professional, but getting rich in ten years is never going to happen.

Our local HVAC professional was a very weird dude.

• He barely talked when he was at the house, other than to tell me what was wrong with the A/C system.

My neighbor agreed that he was a bit strange. She knew his spouse, and she said he was always in the garage working, even when he wasn’t working for the HVAC company. I didn’t know him or his spouse, but I had to agree he was a bit eccentric. One of my favorite television shows is Forged in Fire. I was watching the show, and it shocked me to see our local HVAC worker as one of their guests. He was talking about where he came from, and what he did when he was forging. When he told them he was a HVAC professional, one of the guys asked if he had an air conditioned forge, and he simply said nope. He got into the final two on that episode, but I didn’t get to see if he won because I had to rush to the kitchen to check the oven. The next day, I forgot all about the television show and the HVAC dude until the air conditioning system malfunctioned. I called the HVAC company and was given an appointment early the next day. When the HVAC professional arrived, I realized he was the same guy I saw on television. I could barely hold my excitement until he was finished repairing the air conditioning system unit. I wanted to know if he had won on Forged in Fire. Who could have imagined that the HVAC worker had such a strange hobby?

I had known Ricky since we were at university. Ricky and I never ran in the same circles, although he was always kind to me. I was the farm girl who had to milk and take care of the cows, and he was the BMOC. It didn’t matter what activity he participated in; he was always successful. Everyone thought he was going to end up in a major baseball league, or the NFL, but they were all wrong. He didn’t even accept a scholarship. He repaired the air conditioning system quickly and then came in to talk to me. The first thing he said was that being a veterinarian suited me and I glowed with excitement. I stopped working as soon as he asked me to marry him. He said he had been in love with me for years, and he wanted me to go out with him before the offer became concrete.
