City life can be quite fulfilling. I know many people criticize the busy lifestyle of this generation, but I thrive in it. I love watching and being part of the craziness all around me. The rushing passersby, the cars, the noise, and the chaos is so wonderful. Growing up in a rural area made me never want to be so isolated again in my life. But, there are times I want to get away to a place where I can hear my thoughts. My friends have a cabin about two hours from the city I went to last weekend. It was late fall, so turning on the heating system made sense the minute I got inside. They had an old gas furnace that had been part of the cabin for a decade-plus. My friend advised me on how best to use the heating system. And in case of any issues, there was a heating system repair expert in a town about 15 minutes from the cabin. That first night, everything was good, and I enjoyed every bit of the silence around me. But, the next day wasn’t as lovely since the heating system kept turning off. I wasn’t sure what was causing this, so I went to find my phone, which had the number of the heating system expert. He was not far away from me on another call and promised to come by when he was finished. Luckily, this was daytime, and the sun was out. Here I was assuming that I had found the perfect Heating as well as A/C company simply because all of their reviews were positive. But I should have seen a green flag when I noticed that they only had a handful of reviews to begin, much fewer than any of their competitors. I found out later that it was a company that had changed their name a handful of unusual times. If the Heating as well as A/C company had changed hands with each name change, it would make sense. Instead, they would create a up-to-date company name after so several bad reviews from ripping people off & taking their hard- received money.

So what began as a normal cold water swim in the sea, ended an hour later with two cops and an ambulance at the scene.

This morning was colder than normal I noticed as I biked to my swim spot.

It was a good test of my fortitude and I took the plunge. I was exercising and spent more time than normal in the 55F water, maybe 30 minutes. When I got out I lost my equilibrium and was shaking and stumbling, hypothermia was setting in. They called an ambulance and cops and had me in the ambulance for 30 minutes. I was trying to warm up but they had the air conditioning blasting at me and I was too confused to ask them to turn it off. I have no idea why the air was on when outside it was about 45F, but I did know that I was still freezing cold from my dip. They finally turned on the heater and I slowly warmed up again. I was still shivering for another 30 or so minutes but the hypothermia was starting to dissipate. There is no heat pump in the sea and mother nature does not hold back her fury even on a calm day such as today. The sea has taken many lives from those who dare to challenge its limits and I was close to that limit today. As I sit in front of my space heater still trying to warm up from that slap on the wrist from the sea I have even more respect for the power of the earth’s oceans.
