It was difficult for me to get through high school.

I have a learning disability.

I have a difficult time concentrating, and I don’t retain what I read.

The only thing that got me through high school was a very patient friend who tutored me in every class. She would come to the house every night and walk me through the homework. I would read the sentence, but she would read it so I understood. When my dad told me that after graduation I had to go to trade school, I was upset. He knew how difficult it was for me to learn. He watched me struggle and I always ended with a D + or a C-. When he told me he expected me to go to school and be an HVAC technician. I was panicking just thinking about everything I had to learn. I knew there were a lot of technical things I had to learn. I talked to Shelley and told her what my parents were pushing me to do. She grabbed my hand and told me to breathe. She would be home during the summer and able to help me learn. She said that she would even go to class with me so she could go over what I had learned in class. I chuckled and said I thought she would look awful cute in the HVAC uniform. She smiled and pushed her hair behind her ears which I was beginning to see was embarrassment. She hated being complimented, but her being an HVAC technician had me looking at her as more of a friend. I wanted her to go to college, but I hoped she went to HVAC school with me.

What happened to my HVAC technician?

Last week, I called the HVAC company to have my air conditioning unit inspected. It was less than forty-eight hours when he showed up at the house. I couldn’t believe how efficient the HVAC company was. I had never had an HVAC appointment that wasn’t at least a week out. When the HVAC technician arrived, he went right to work. An hour later, he came into the house and discussed his findings. He said we needed a new fan motor and the coolant was low. He already filled the coolant, but he had to go back to the shop and get a fan motor. I was okay with it and he said he would return in an hour. I made lunch for my kids while waiting for the HVAC technician to arrive. The kids were fed and heading out to play, and the tech still hadn’t arrived. After another hour, I called the HVAC company to check on the young man. They asked if I was sure he was coming back? He had told me he had to come back to the HVAC company to get a new fan motor. He had never returned. I would be out looking for him if he was my employee. Five minutes after I hung up from the HVAC company, the HVAC tech called. He said he was a witness to an accident and was just leaving the scene. As soon as he picked up the fan motor he would return. I prayed he wasn’t lying, but as long as I had my air conditioning unit put back together before my husband got home, I would be happy.

When it snows, the furnace breaks down.

If your furnace has any problems, it doesn’t take a scholar to know that when it snows, the furnace is going to break down. It doesn’t need to be snowing to make the furnace suddenly quit working. Any kind of inclement weather, including extreme cold, will give the furnace the impetus it needs to finally quit. Maybe you’ve never experienced this, but I have. Twice in the last fifteen years, my furnace has died during the worst weather in the season. The HVAC technician told me the reason was because the furnace is working hard to keep up with the weather. It is trying to fight off the cold so you can stay warm. Any components that aren’t perfect are getting added strain and are bound to break at that time. You can explain that it is an overworking furnace, or Murphy’s law, or that my furnace is taking this chance to get back at me for now being more vigilant. Whatever you say, it still doesn’t make it easier to take when your furnace breaks down during a period of really bad weather. This has happened to me twice in the last fifteen years. Within a year of buying my home, I had to have the HVAC system replaced. Fifteen years later, during the blizzard of a lifetime, my furnace, which was fifteen years old, died. When you’re left out in the cold for almost a week because of no furnace, it doesn’t make for a good week.

What’s the big deal about living in your van?

Three years ago I converted my van into an apartment. I saw a television show where they converted a van into a camper that had a full kitchenette at the back door, with a bed near the front. I had a small ductless HVAC system so I didn’t need to have the van running 24/7. After graduating college, I moved south. I was hoping to get a job in Marine Biology with one of the state aquariums. Whenever I put in an application for employment, the first question is name and address. I didn’t have an address so I put down the license number of my van. I usually got an odd look and I was sure they didn’t even look at the application. One person asked about my van and what it was like living in it? I told them I had everything I needed and invited him over for dinner. I pulled out the grill and got it heating. When he showed up, I had everything ready to cook. The first thing he asked about was the van. I showed him the bed and how it folded back to give me a couch if I had company. There wasn’t head room, but I had a small fridge for drinks and snacks, and even a place for my clothing. I pulled out the porta potty and showed it to him. I basically had everything but running water. He asked me what I did for HVAC. I showed him the ductless HVAC system and let him feel how good the heating and air conditioning could be. We had dinner during the sunset and then he told me to come to the HR department the next day.

Hey Mom! Can I get a storage bin bedroom?

He said it had excellent HVAC, so I thought I should look into it

I was talking to my son the other day and he informed me needed a new room. He thought it would be cool if we bought him a storage bin bedroom. I had no idea what he was talking about. He said he had been watching a television show and they were talking about taking portable storage bins and cutting them in half. One wall was all glass, and it was designed to suit the needs of the buyer. They included all furnishings, decorating, and an HVAC system. The room was soundproof and weather proofed. I stood there listening to him and trying to wrap my head around what he was saying. He already had a good bedroom that had windows, was decorated for him, and had excellent HVAC. Why was he talking about a new room. I decided to play along and see what he was really saying. When he said it was soundproof and waterproof, I asked about his new girlfriend. He sputtered and said he was sixteen and wanted some privacy. He was tired of his little brothers just walking in on him. An 8X10 room wasn’t too big, but if it was what he really wanted, I thought I should consider it. He said it had excellent HVAC, so I thought I should look into it. I wanted to know what it would cost to turn the attached garage into an apartment for him, but when my brother said it could easily be more than $10,000, I knew it wasn’t going to happen. When I realized the storage container room was over $20,000, I decided to see if my brother could trim the cost and I would use the garage.

I wanted a She shed with HVAC.

My husband is constantly heading into the basement that he refers to as his mancave.

I can hear music blasting in every room of the house. I work from home and it is quite difficult to concentrate when you have a lot of noise. After being late with my work for three weeks in a row, I made a stance. There was an unused shed attached to the house, and I wanted a She shed. I wanted to have walls and a ceiling installed. I also wanted to have an HVAC system in my shed. When I said something to my husband, he laughed. I almost walked away from him, but I stared him down. Why was he able to have a place all his own, but I couldn’t. He was retired and could play on his computer anywhere in the house. I needed a quiet place that had good HVAC. It is difficult to concentrate when there is music blaring, it is so cold that your fingers won’t move, or so hot that your brain is frying. I am the one who is now working and paying the bills. You would think that turning his old tool shed into a she shed would be a simple thing to do. He thinks it is way beyond his limits. I went out that weekend and bought all the materials to fix the shed, and ductless HVAC system. He won’t be so quick to tell me it is beyond his limits when our son comes in to do all the construction and install the HVAC system..

We couldn't figure out why there weren’t any thermostats.

As a realtor, you have the ability to go into all new rentals and sales before they are on the market.

This gives you the opportunity to know if it is something that will sell to one of your current clients. The last realtor opening I went to was a modern house. It had radiant heating, but there were no thermostats in the rooms. I couldn’t believe that a brand new house didn’t have Zone Control. I carefully examined every room to see if a thermostat was hidden somewhere, but I came up with nothing. When I heard some of the people discussing the thermostat situation, I walked over. We all agreed that it had to be an integrated HVAC system. I walked up to the person who was holding the realtor opening and asked where the computer system was? He smiled and took me into the music room. OUt in the open, but carefully placed, was a complete computer system. Not only was the security system linked into the computer, but so was the HVAC system. The integrated system was carefully monitored by an integrated systems company. If there was a problem with any part of the HVAC system, it would be texted to the owner and the HVAC company. The owners of the house were able to adjust the temperatures in every room as long as they had the codes. It was an interesting setup, but it wasn’t something I wanted in a home of mine, but some of my clients would be interested. I couldn’t wait until one client in particular got to see this house.
