I received an excellent education by all reasonable metrics. My teachers were caring, yet disciplinarian, intelligent, yet humble. I thank God for them, but other aspects of my school life, growing up, were quite unfortunate. Our school was small and not well funded. The classrooms were cramped and sparsely furnished with little wooden desks and chairs from the 50s! I could go on, but the most difficult thing to deal with of all was the lack of air conditioning and boiler that was always breaking down. Summers in my hometown were mild, for the most part, but heat waves were not uncommon. I remember our only respite from the heat in our cramped and poorly ventilated classrooms was opening the one small window. The breeze was either a thin wisp of cool air or nonexistent, which defeated the point. Winters were far worse. Below freezing or even single digit temperatures were common. The old boiler that served as the heat source for our school was temperamental, to say the least. When it did function, the warmth could be overbearing in the rooms near the boiler room. I found myself sweating, quite a lot. When it was on the fritz, however, things were far worse. Without heat in the classrooms, my teeth were chattering and I would shiver uncontrollably! I soon learned the necessity of packing extra layers, just in case the boiler wasn’t working that day. I am pleased when I drive by my old school today. It is much bigger and I can see that central heating and air conditioning has been installed. Those students are fortunate!
Doing business with a new HVAC company
A new HVAC company moved into the neighborhood.
I live in a pretty small town, so there is not a wide variety of options when it comes to any type of business, much less climate control services.
It was a godsend for me! This small town only had two options for climate control repair and installation. One business is super expensive and always busy. The other is smaller, cheaper, but completely inept! I was really tired of picking my poison! Should I go with the smaller HVAC company that offers cheaper prices for equally cheaper work? For example, they topped off my freon multiple times so my A/C blew cool air again. However, they neglected to patch the hole causing the leak! And at that point, was I really saving money when the HVAC guy had to come back out for multiple visits for which I will be charged again? Or do I go with the expensive and always busy company that has at least somewhat reputable HVAC technicians. Only problem is, I’ll get the issue fixed much later and pay far more. The last time I used their services, my appointment could not be booked any earlier than a month later. I had to go without A/C that long! This new company has employees with impressive certifications and experience. They’re charging reasonable prices and offering great sales and deals to defeat the competition. I’m loving it! I’m even tempted to take advantage of their super cheap offer for a pretty decent new HVAC system.
The importance of making the right choice when it comes to HVAC companies
Check their certification, compare their prices, ask about their maintenance plans, and so forth
There are a lot of people that you need to rely on in your daily life. You need to have a good doctor for sure. A good dentist and a good barber that you can trust is also a necessity. Moreover, you should get a good accountant and even a good lawyer if you can afford one. But did you know that a good HVAC technician working for a great HVAC company is also important? You should not necessarily find a nearby HVAC company and just assume that there are no other options available to you. Look up nearby HVAC businesses, check reviews online, and ask questions about the service they provide. A climate control system is a huge investment, and you want to protect it by placing it in the hands of the right people. Even more so, if it comes to installing a brand new HVAC system you want to be able to rely on the technicians that will take the time to figure out the absolute best fit for your home. Perhaps this quality customer service is not as widely available as it used to be, but that’s why it’s important to screen your local HVAC companies and use the power of choice. Check their certification, compare their prices, ask about their maintenance plans, and so forth. This is all very important to put especially if you live in a state that sees extreme temperature changes throughout the year. Keeping your house cool or warm may not just be a matter of comfort, after all, it may just save your life in some of the more inhospitable places of the country!
Why are there air vents if there is no ductwork?
When we moved into our home, there was wall-to-wall carpeting in every room.
The first thing my husband and I had on our list of two dues, was removed the wall-to-wall carpeting and every room but the guest room.
The guests that we got to our home, was usually our parents. His parents and mine both liked wall-to-wall carpeting. When we began ripping the carpeting out of the other rooms, I was surprised to see air vents in the floors. There were two air vents in the main living room, and two air vents in the dining room. I couldn’t understand why they were air vents if there was no ductwork in the house. My husband got a chuckle out of it, but I didn’t see anything funny about it. I had air vents in this beautiful hardwood flooring we had uncovered, and they were necessary. All the air vents were doing was taking away from the beauty of my hardwood. After calling the HVAC company, I called the flooring center. I wanted to see if they could cover that part of the flooring were the air vent was, and make it look like it belonged in that area. The HVAC company showed up before the flooring company. They told us this house originally had ductwork, but when the owners put in ductless HVAC, they only had the ductwork removed and closed off the air vents. This made me feel little better, but I still had to get rid of the air vents. The people from the flooring company assured me they could make it look just like the rest of the flooring, but it was going to be a little expensive. Now I understood why they just closed off the air vents and left the covers there.

I wasn’t sure what HVAC company I wanted to use.
When our local HVAC company closes stores, I wasn’t sure what HVAC company I wanted to use.
I knew I had to secure one soon, because I would soon need to have the furnace prepped for winter.
I want to wait too long because we often had snow in the beginning of October, and it was already September. I called several HVAC companies in the area, but some of them did not travel to our part of the county. I finally called one last HVAC company that was on my list. I told him exactly where we lived and explained that the HVAC company we had used had recently closed stores. Told us that there were a lot of people who were calling right now, but he was sure he could help us out. He had a local HVAC technician that lived within a mile from us. When he showed up to service our furnace, he was not dressed like an HVAC technician. He looked like someone who had just come in from the field. I called the HVAC company to check and make sure this was there HVAC technician. Of the young man’s stood at the door while he waited for me to finish the phone call. He showed me his HVAC company ID card, and said that there were a lot of people out here and when they hired him they knew he also had a farm in this area. Being able to do his farming, and still practice HVAC was the perfect job for him. One good thing about having him for HVAC technician, was that we didn’t have to worry about wondering which HVAC technician was going to show up.
The attic had a voice of its own.
Although my husband not already had the house where dreams, when ever we went by an open house sign, I wanted to go into the house.
It was one of my little eccentricities that my husband went along with.
Last week, we are going by this pretty little bungalow and I told my husband I wanted to. The first thing the realtor told me was many people thought the house was haunted. I shrugged and told her I didn’t mind not and I just wanted to look at the house. The first place she took us, was into the attic. She said this is where most of the hauntings occurred. I stood there for a couple moments and listened. The attic had a voice of its own. My husband started looking around in all the corners, and I saw the smile on his face. My husband was an HVAC technician, and he instantly knew what was going on. He told her there was so much airflow in the attic, and that the sound of the air coming through the broken ductwork, is where the whistling and the noise was coming from. He pointed out a small fissure where the ductwork has been joined together. He told her that if they had someone come in and repair the ductwork, there would be no more whistling going to the attic. She told us that many people wanted a house that was haunted, which I thought was kind of odd. We weren’t even out of the house when my husband said that we should buy it. He said that all we had to do was repair the ductwork, and fix the windows in the attic and we could make a tidy little profit off the house.
He told me to duck when I went into the basement.
I had been house shopping for about three weeks, when I thought I hadfound the home of my dreams.
I hadn’t yet had any inspections done, but I’d seen the main part of the house and I was pleased with it.
When I requested having inspections done, the realtor told me I needed to take a closer look. She told me before I made any decision, I needed to look into the attic, and the basement. The attic was little dark and extremely hot, but I knew with some insulation and putting a ventilation fan in the roof, it would take care of some of the heat. The basement however, was a completely different story. Not only was it dark and dank, but even before we got to the bottom the steps, the realtor told me I had to stoop. Stoop wasn’t even the word. I had to duck to get under the floor and down the rest of the steps, and stay down as I walked through the basement. I was only 5’4″, and the basement ceiling was so low that it was surprising they were even able to get a furnace into the basement. The worst part of the basement, was that it was small and the ductwork was taking up some of the headspace. I backed off on having the inspections done, and told her I needed to keep looking. I needed a house that had excellent HVAC with a basement and attic that I could turn into usable rooms. The realtor nodded, and she changed my criteria to now include excellent HVAC and usable basement and attic.
