Learned a lesson in HVAC technology gains

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 26 years since we bought this house and had the HVAC unit installed.

We actually made out like bandits on this house because the owner didn’t want to do anything.

He just wanted out and didn’t want to do anything to add value to the house. We happened to be in the right place at the right time. Essentially, we took the place as is. And that meant there was a lot of work to do. Yet, it was livable for sure outside of the heating and cooling. That old HVAC unit was barely able to eek out any sort of heating and cooling. So we simply had to start the renovations there. I remember working with the HVAC contractor to get the most residential HVAC for the amount of money we had at the time. We ended up going just a bit over budget for that HVAC equipment. But wow, did we ever get our value out of it. Of course, the HVAC equipment always got seasonal HVAC maintenance every year starting at year one. So there is definitely a great deal of value in HVAC maintenance. I’m here to attest to that. Decades later, I’m in the process of replacing that old HVAC unit and I’m really getting a lesson in residential HVAC. The evolution of HVAC technology has been remarkable in the past 25 years. The new HVAC equipment I’m putting in my house is almost three time more efficient than the one that’s finished it quality heating and air mission.

Temporary renting situation makes me miss my own HVAC unit

I remember now why I really wanted to own my own house.

My wife and I are temporarily renting after just selling the family home.

It’s been a heck of an experience I can assure you of that. When you live somewhere for nearly 30 years, you tend to accumulate stuff. And I thought the hard part was going to be upgrading the HVAC equipment and all the other projects we did to get the house on the market. The new residential HVAC sure made a difference though. This region comes with plenty of heat and humidity so home buyers want a turn key situation when it comes to the HVAC. I don’t blame them either. I’d want to come into a new place and have the quality heating and air I’d expect without having to upgrade the HVAC myself. That sure isn’t the case in the condo we are renting for at least the next six months. The residential HVAC in this place is long past its prime. We seem to call the rental office weekly because that heat pump is completely overwhelmed in the summer heat. It makes me so ready to get to the next house or wherever it is we choose to go. All I know is that I’m going to enjoy the great heating and cooling of the latest in residential HVAC. Going through all that stuff, paring down and packing up that stuff was so much better thanks to the great HVAC we were able to experience in our old house before we moved out.

New approach to air conditioning results in better summer, less costs

I’m always for saving money.

If it makes sense, is legal and ethical, I’m always game for a plan that will save me money.

When it came to the HVAC cooling in my home, I really needed a new plan. Since we moved down here three years ago, we’ve been essentially letting the HVAC cooling run wild. That really hasn’t been the best when it comes to our household budget. Still, we didn’t really know quite what else to do when it came to the summers down here. Frankly, my wife and I were both stunned by the intensity and duration of the summer heat when we moved here. Sure, we knew it was going to be hot but we weren’t prepared for the wet blast furnace it turned out to be. Subsequently, we just leaned into the thermostat setting. It’s like the heat pump runs night and day from June through September. For sure, I’m so glad that we have a new heat pump with a high SEER rating. But even with all that HVAC efficiency, the cost of air conditioning just got out of hand. So I ended up approaching one of the guys in my golf group about his strategy for HVAC cooling and the summers around here. He’s a native and he suggested that I need to just wait to turn on the air conditioning until the very end of spring. This allows the body to acclimate to higher temperatures. We did just that and it has worked like a charm. Now, a thermostat setting of 80 during the peak heating hours of the day feels cool when it’s in the high 90’s outside.

Can’t believe the price we got on our house after HVAC upgrade

There was a period there where we had to do everything we could just to hang on to our home. That was sort of a tough time and a bit scary if I’m honest. My wife and I bought this place and brought it back to life. We replaced just about everything in the house once we got our names on the deed. That includes the HVAC equipment. There was so much to do that we got the best residential HVAC unit that we could afford at the time. This turned out to be a heck of a piece of heating and cooling equipment. As soon as we had that HVAC unit installed, we made sure that we started up with all the HVAC maintenance it needed. That meant heating maintenance in the fall so there were no worries in the winter. And then the HVAC professional came back in the spring to do the air conditioning tune up prior to the high heat and humidity of summer. And that thing lasted until we decided to sell. Granted, it wasn’t at it’s most efficient but it made it to the finish line. As part of getting the house on the market, we upgraded the HVAC unit. I was stunned by the HVAC technology evolution from what we put in nearly 30 years ago. The upgraded HVAC equipment is the very latest in residential HVAC and just the SEER rating for the heat pump is nearly triple what the old one was. The heating and cooling utility costs will be slashed significantly compared to what we were experiencing prior to the HVAC upgrade. Plus, we sold the house for a ton of money. Sure glad we were able to hold onto the house and cash in on this long term investment.

A night out because of the HVAC

So, I totally rolled the dice and it came up a stone loser.

That’s the sort of thing that happens when you bet on hope and prayer.

This is essentially what I did when I bet against a trained HVAC professional. The HVAC technician was out this spring to do the spring air conditioning tune up. And when he finished, he informed us that the heat pump was probably not going to make it through another summer. Of course, I should have known that given the fact that I was the one who had that HVAC unit installed when we first bought the house. Yet, I just didn’t start saving for the known eventuality of replacing the HVAC equipment. To say I was caught by surprise would be an understatement. My wife and I thought that we might be able to seal up the house really tight and put up solar shades to stop the direct sunlight heating to ease the load. That was the plan we decided upon and we went into the summer thinking that we had a good chance to make it. It’s nearly mid August which is about the most brutal part of the summer. This is when you want your heat pump firing on all cylinders. Well, ours is dead and we are making sure that we go out each night to enjoy air conditioning elsewhere. We wait almost until bedtime and then line up the fans. It’s going to be this way for a few weeks while we wait for the HVAC equipment to get here.

Getting my post retirement life on with plenty of HVAC

So I found out pretty quickly that retirement really was going to happen.

  • As I hit the last six months before retirement, the reality of not working began to set in.

I was going to leave my office with the zone controlled HVAC for good. Someone else would be setting the thermostat in that office. Those were the things that really started hitting home. And of course, we were selling the house and moving south. That too was a very big deal as well. My wife was coordinating all of that pretty much as she had retired a year earlier. I had worked to get the HVAC company to put in the new residential HVAC. We did some upgrades in order to get the most out of our house. Plus, it was time. That old HVAC really went a long time and gave us great quality heating and air. The next thing I know, I’m walking out of the office with a box of my stuff and it was over. We sold the house and moved about 2 months later. It was sort of nice to be able to get my feet under me after retiring with that incredible residential HVAC. The new upgrade is the latest in residential HVAC with all kinds of HVAC technology. There is zone controlled HVAC as well as a smart thermostat to run the whole thing. Now we are down south and I’m experiencing my first summer down here. And thank goodness we have the best heat pump we could buy because I’m really leaning into the HVAC cooling. The heat and humidity are going to take a bit to get accustomed to so I’m going to let myself have all the air conditioning I want this summer.

Romance and the heat pump

I’m just such a lucky guy.

And it’s good to know that so I don’t have the tendency to take my life for granted. I’m married to my best friend and we have a nice home with lovely quality heating and air among lots of other great stuff in this house. It’s been nearly 20 years now and it seems like it was just yesterday that I nearly killed my residential HVAC trying to woo her. Our lives are great and we love each other on a level that only grows deeper with each passing year. But we still get a kick reminiscing about how we fell in love. We actually both took jobs in the same office building just after graduating from college. Neither of us was from this region and came for the job. While we worked inside the same building, we didn’t work for the same company. However, we kept seeing each other at lunch because we both liked getting out of the commercial HVAC and into the sun with some fresh air. We both thought living in this region was the best because the weather was perfect from October through May. So we started eating lunch together and going on some dates. By spring, I had asked her to my place to cook for her. This was my way of making the big move and trying to make it exclusive. So I fired up like 50 candles so the whole evening was by candlelight. What I didn’t realize was that all that burnt wax was sealing the HVAC air filter. I nearly killed the residential HVAC trying to get my wife to fall in love with me.
