The up-to-date owner was transforming the old service station down the street into a modern, well-equipped auto service center, i work for an a/c supplier as an a/c device rep, and the up-to-date owner called asking for a/c device services… The shop would need more than an a/c tune-up, and I was the unlucky a/c expert given the job; well, depending on how you look at it.

There would be possible a/c service because I doubted anyone had bothered to care for the a/c device when it was closed, but when I got there, the a/c upgrade was in disarray, just as I had anticipated.

It was clear from the control device that the heat pump was off, but it must have been running for a while, even after the shop was closed before they switched it off. I have worked in the a/c supplier for years, but the state of the a/c filter was rare. It had all manners of grime and filth. It must have been the same filter as the previous owners before they closed the shop. The cooling unit surprisingly did not have a lot of technical complications, and after the cleaning, which took most of our time, especially me cleaning ducts, the cooling products were as good as new. I hoped that the up-to-date owners would take better care of it so that it would serve them better. I would need to teach them more about a/c and how to work the cooling technology so they can get the most out of it, then otherwise, they would constantly call for a cooling specialist on issues they could definitely avoid.

I can’t really articulate what a jolt to the system it has been to be renting again.

That hasn’t happened since I was in my mid twenties.

Prior to owning my first house, I lived in an apartment that was just the worst. It had the worst heating and cooling equipment you can imagine. My girlfriend at the time, who’s now my wife, we re so smitten with each other that it just didn’t matter. These days, my wife and I are still in love and are just the best partners. We’re also really excited about starting a brand new chapter of our lives. But now that I’m renting again, I’m sure noticing HVAC comfort. The place we’re renting is okay. It was somewhere to go after we sold the house. We upgraded HVAC equipment and did some other renovations to get the best price we could on the family home. But the packing and moving part we didn’t really plan very well. In fact, I wasn’t so sure that we wouldn’t get out of that house in time. When you’re trying to pare down more than 30 years worth of stuff, it takes a while. I can assure you there was some really long days and nights doing nothing but sorting through our stuff and packing what we were keeping. At least we had the new residential HVAC equipment which was nice. I’m glad we sold the house header and are simplifying our lives. But it sure has been tough and having not so great residential HVAC is a real motivator to figure out the next step.

 

Heating service

For far too long, I’ve just sort of pretended that the garage just really wasn’t even there.

This was some sort of transference because I was partly responsible for letting it get to the condition it was in.

When we moved here, my wife and I were so excited to have a house with excellent residential HVAC and a two car garage. We had been living in apartments up until that point. So you can imagine how excited we were to be living in our own place. I even put a workbench out in that garage so I could slip out of the air conditioning the kind of fool around when our kids were little and I needed a break. The garage also served as the secret spot when my wife needed a moment would go out to sneak a cigarette. The older the kids got, the more the garage got trashed and became a junkyard. This was distressing to me to the point where I just had to put it out of my mind. I would try to clean out the garage but it would last a few days before it was wrecked again. But once we all got locked down inside the central air conditioning of the house, I knew I was going to need some garage time. But I also knew that I would need more than just a clean organized garage. We were rolling into summer so I called the HVAC company to see what they could do to about some residential HVAC in the garage. The answer was of course, a ductless heat pump. The HVAC technician had that thing installed in an afternoon. Wow, what a difference having that ductless heat pump and some quality heating and air has made for that space. I love it out there now.

I just hit the finish line for this year’s winter prep on the house and the HVAC equipment.

I finished up this past weekend which is a full week before my deadline.

I like to be done with the prep on the house by Thanksgiving week and that’s right around the corner. From the HVAC equipment to the rest of the house, I’m all about winter preparations. So this year, I think I’ll make myself an extra turkey sandwich with a big bowl of mashed potatoes and gravy as a victory lap. Normally, I try to get going on the preparations for winter by the time the kids are headed off to school. I get a full winter’s worth of firewood delivered to the house. We have wood stove in the basement which works as both a supplemental and emergency heating method. After that I called HVAC company to have them come out to do the fall Heating maintenance appointment. This is something I’ve always been consistent about because HVAC maintenance pay is off. Getting the fall heating maintenance ensures both the best efficiency as well as keeping the gas furnace in top shape for the load that comes with a cold winter. In between those things, I go down my list to make sure that the house is sealed up really tight. Whether that’s replacing weather stripping or adding more insulation, it’s all about a tight house. We’re just now starting to get the first blast of cold. The gas furnace is kicking on and staying on a lot longer now. Soon, we’ll be into the teeth of winter and I’ll be very glad that I’m saving so much on HVAC heating costs due to winter prep.

There are times when I just don’t want to get out of bed.

Yes, I’m getting older and creakier for sure. But it’s more that I’m getting so cold so easy these days. I’m in my early sixties and have been stunned by the changes in my body when it comes to temperature. But I’m glad that we ditched the gas furnace typing winters for the heat pump mild winters down South. This was a tough decision but it ended up being the very best one. Considering the way I am about cold temperatures, I don’t think I could even survived another winter anymore. The heat pump in our new place barely even comes on during the winter. I do move the thermostat over to the heating side once Thanksgiving rolls around. Yet it might be weeks before that thing even comes on. My wife even loves the winter down here because the air conditioning is finally off. We have a pretty serious summer from June through September and that’s tougher on her than it is for me. But don’t get me wrong because I’m awfully grateful to have that HVAC cooling from the heat pump during the summer. However, my wife could use a dose more of HVAC cooling than I do. The older we get, it’s more like this intricate dance when it comes to where the thermostat setting is going to be. My wife likes to use the smart thermostat app on her phone to be sneaky about changing the thermostat setting. But like I said, I’m getting so sensitive to the cold that it makes me check my smart thermostat app. So she doesn’t get away with it for very long.
