I never gave a thought to the fact that we had a boiler system for heating.

Our heat came from the hot water flowing through pipes.

We took for granted that we always had excellent heating in our home, and loved it. A couple of weeks ago, we had a problem with our well. We had to wait two weeks before we could a well professional to come to the house, pull the water pump, and replace it. Our well was 325 feet deep, and the pump quit running. It was frigid outside, and we couldn’t get any water unless we bought gallons of it. Then we realized that without water, we didn’t have any heat. Our boiler didn’t work if there was no water to heat. I called the well drilling company a second time and asked if they could fit us in anywhere possible. I explained we had a boiler and without water, we didn’t have heat. She put a rush on the well repair, and asked if we had alternative heating system. We had a fireplace in the living room, but the heat didn’t get to the bedrooms at the other end of the house. We had a couple of space heaters for my husband’s mother’s room, and one for our bedroom, so we weren’t freezing to death. Two days later, there was a knock on the door. The owner of the well drilling company brought a new well pump with them and his son who was an HVAC technician. In case we had trouble starting the boiler, he was there to help.

Most people look at you like you’re nuts when you tell them you’re going camping in the desert.

We had a small camper, but it had bathroom, a bedroom, and HVAC. We were going to be comfortable while camping. I wanted to see the stars from the desert and my bestie wanted to see if it really got cold in the desert at night. We set up camp, pulled out some food we had in the cooler, and was just getting comfortable, when the night got silent. I looked at my bestie, and she looked at me. We both said it at the same time. The HVAC system quit working. We pulled all of our stuff into the camper, and knew we had to pull out before the sun came up. We had travelled all day, and now we had to travel all night until we could find another campground, or a hotel we could afford. I started to laugh at the irony of it. We came to the desert, lost our HVAC, and now we needed a hotel with heat because it was too cold to go without it. We both began to laugh. She looked at me and said that once we found a hotel, she wanted to be the first in the shower. We flipped a coin, and then flipped another coin to see which hotel we wanted to stay at. It was an easy choice, because one of them also had our favorite restaurant in the lot. We could order from their menu and both of us be showered before they made delivery.

I know it seems sappy, but I was so in love with my girlfriend that I would do anything for her.

• She made plans to go to HVAC school, and told me she would be with a lot of strong, handsome men.

I was so jealous that I asked her not to go and she refused. She told me that if I didn’t want her going to HVAC school by herself; I should join her. I didn’t think she was serious, but when she dared me to go to HVAC school, I couldn’t resist. I wanted to be. wherever she was, and that included what I chose for a life career. I told her I would meet her there, but I forgot to ask where she would go to school? I signed up for HVAC school at the local community college. When i got to the first class, Mary wasn’t there. I couldn’t believe she missed the first HVAC class, and I talked to the instructor. He checked his class roster, but she wasn’t on it. I couldn’t quit class now that I was starting, even if it was the first day. Every day I came into HVAC class, I looked to see if Mary was there. After a month, I knew she would not be there. After three months, I was sure I had lost my girlfriend. Three years later, I moved and went to another HVAC company. I walked in on the first day of work and there was my ex-girlfriend. She was married now, and I was happy for her. We had both made wonderful lives for ourselves.

He threw the rat from his shoulder and it ran over and bit the HVAC tech on the leg

We had a three-pound rat our father had bought for us when we were little. When we moved out of the house, my father told us one of us had to take the rat with them. He wasn’t the owner of the rat, and he would not care for it when we left. I didn’t want the rat, and neither did my brother. My father handed us the cage and said to duke it out. I took the rat into the basement where he ran around freely and left him there. He had his own play area that was enclosed with a wood fence. A week later, dad called, and he was furious. He had the HVAC technician at the house, and the man nearly had a heart attack. I asked what that had to do with my brother and I. Dad wanted to know where the rat was? I told him I had put him in his play area and I would pick him up in a week or so. That’s when he told me the HVAC tech found our pet rat. It had chewed through the fence, and it jumped down on the HVAC technician when he was trying to repair the furnace. The HVAC technician jumped up and hit his head on the ductwork. He threw the rat from his shoulder and it ran over and bit the HVAC tech on the leg. The good part is that the HVAC technician will be fine, but he would be in the hospital overnight. Since the rat bit the HVAC technician, he would be captured and tested for rabies.

It offended me when my HVAC instructor pulled me aside.

He asked who told me to be an HVAC technician? I stood there and looked at him before saying that no one told me to be an HVAC technician.

I wanted to be an HVAC technician. He looked at me like he didn’t think it was a wise choice, but he told me to go back to class. After that chat, I worked harder than any other student, and was at the top of the class. When it came time to go to HVAC certification classes, I knew I was just as good an HVAC technician as any man in that class. It was hard getting into HVAC when you were a woman, but it was even harder forty years ago when I went to HVAC school. My father had trained me, and I knew what I was doing, but since I was a woman, I had to go to school and prove myself. Most men didn’t have their HVAC certification back then, but I had to have it. I was sexually harassed, and they tried to make me look bad. None of that would happen now, because harassment wasn’t illegal back then. Women were just getting their voice, but there were some jobs considered inappropriate for women, and HVAC was in that class. Now, a woman can do anything job they want, and most women can do it just as well as men. I was one of those who was just as good as my colleagues and better than some. Thanks to my father’s help, I not only moved ahead in the HVAC company, but I owned the first woman-owned HVAC company in our area.

My husband asked me to call the HVAC company. We needed to replace our air conditioning unit before summer. We decided since the HVAC system was almost twenty years old, we would replace the entire system. When the HVAC contractor arrived, I couldn’t take my eyes off him. My husband wanted to know why I was staring at the man, and I told him he looked familiar. I couldn’t place where I had seen him, but he looked really familiar. I asked what his name was, but my husband couldn’t remember. He just looked at the HVAC ID badge and let him in. When he came upstairs, he was quick to turn his back on me while talking to my husband. Even when he was talking to both of us, he had a way of hiding his badge. Half an hour later, he was getting ready to go. He leaned over, kissed my cheek, and said ‘good night, Henny’, and I laughed. I turned Bill around and told my husband this was little Billy. He’s the monster I babysat when I was fifteen years old, and he was five. Our HVAC technician gave me another hug and told me I was just as pretty now as I was twenty-five years ago. After telling him my name was Jenny, he said he knew. Two days later, he brought his family around so I could meet his wife and twin girls. He proudly introduced me as the first woman he ever fell in love with. We talked about what happened almost twenty-five years ago, and how he had become an HVAC technician. He told me his father-in-law owned the HVAC company, and if I ever needed an HVAC technician, I should ask for him.

It almost seems that just when I suppose that every one of us have gone as far as every one of us can go it turns out that they invent something completely modern that makes Heating plus Air Conditioning chances even better!
